Etymology

'The high enclosure', v. hēah (wk. hēa ), worðign , (ge)hæg, cf. Hawarden Fl (NCPN 215) and Harden St (DEPN). The earliest reference cited is to Thomas de Hawardene , arraigned with Elcocy the butcher of Werneth (302infra ), v. Court 216; but an earlier one is possible in Alexander de Auirdene 1285Eyre (Court 209 reads Anirdene ).

The p.n. has been confused with the surname of the family de Arderne , de Arden , of Alvanley (329infra ). The family came from Nth or Wa and acquired this estate by marriage c. 1330 (cf. Wa 11, 209, v. Orm2 ii 75–82). The surname takes the forms de Harderna 1153–81 Orm2, Hardern 1274 Cl, Erdern e13 Dieul, Ardern (e )e13 VR, Whall, Dieul, et freq , Arderna 1245 Chest, de Ardena 1244 ib, de Ardene 1252 RBE et freq , de Ardenn 1275 Cl, de Ardein 1387 ChRR, Ardren 1288 Court, Darderen 1364 BPR, Arderen 1545Dow , Arderon 1528ib , Ardran 1545ib ; and Hordron 1550ib which is confused with Hordern 139supra . DEPN and EPN are misled by the confusion of surname and p.n.
