Etymology

'At the north manor-house or stronghold', v. norð , burh (dat.sg. byr(i)g). The archæological significance is not known, nor do we know whether this place was 'north' in relation to some particular place or from its location in the north part of the hundred. It was at the north-western extremity of the Forest of Macclesfield.
