Etymology

Low Leighton & Old Leighton (f.ns., 101–955873), Low Leighton & Old Leighton 1849TA , cf. Laitone 1086 DB f.264, 'farm at the clearing or wood', v. lēah , tūn . Laitone could have been in this district. It was in the demesne of Earl Hugh as a waste estate of only one virgate DB, appearing in a list with Hofinchel 165supra , Tintwistle, Hollingworth, Werneth and Romiley 320, 309, 302, 292infra . Marple and Wybersley were in the earl's demesne down to e13 when they were granted to the Vernon family, but are not named in DB.
