Etymology

Grey Nore (lost) is Cranenore 1422, 1483, 1557CplM , Cranore 1510, 1511 ib., Grey Nore 1574 ib., 1840TA , Crane Nore al. Granenore 1704CplM . This is probably 'crane-bank,' a compound of cran and ME  nore , a common form of OE  ora (v. æt ).
