Compton Place
Early-attested site in the Parish of Eastbourne
Etymology
Compton Place was formerly called Bourne Place (17th) and Eastbourne Place (18th cent.). It was renamed when it passed from the Compton family (successors of Sir Spencer Compton, who acquired it in 1724) to the family of Cavendish, from whom it descended to the Duke of Devonshire.
