Historical Forms
- atte Beche 13th CplM
- the Beach 1573 CplM
Etymology
The Beach (lost) was a piece of arable land below the down called Beachy Brow. It was the home of Robert atte Beche (13thCplM ) and is called Beche in 1496, the Beche in 1536, the Beach (1573CplM ). As the land was in a hollow perhaps we have ME beche , 'valley,' cf. the use of beche in Owl and Nightingale l. 14, which probably belongs to the neighbourhood of Guildford (Sr).
