Etymology

This piece of downland preserves the name of 'Easthall,' one of the six tithings of the Hundred of Eastbourne. Esthallingebrouk (1290CplM ) and Esthellyngwey (1325 ib.) are interesting meadow and road-names which are to be associated with Easthall (v. ing ).
