Tinkwood

Etymology

, 1842 OS , cf. Tinkwood Fd 1838TA , 'an acre of land called Tincoyd '1320Chol . The final el . is Welsh coed ' a wood ' , cf. wudu . On the face of it , the name looks like the familiar Welsh Ty ' n y Coed , ' the little holding by the wood ' , with tyddyn , ' a smallholding ' , having loss of intervocal ð and contraction . It is uncertain however whether this loss and contraction could have taken place so early ; though the fact that Ty ' n y Coed and Ty ' n y Caeau ( ' the littleholding in the fields ' ) are among the commonest p. ns . in Wales might be taken to suggest that it may be quite old . An alternative and perhaps preferable explanation would be that Tincoyd 1320 is tŷ yn y coed , ' the house in the wood ' , with ' house ' .
