, castrum suum de Holmes 1590 Camd, Holmes Castle 1779Rudder; the first el., which occurs also in Homehill 1504 Pat, 1600Crav 86, Holmehill 1540AOMB , 1619Dep and Homecrosse als. Batylham 1527Rent , is OE  hamm ' water-meadow ' ( which also becomes holm in Kingsholm 138infra ) ; this was the residence of the Clare family , v. castel and Bloody Meadow (supra ) .
