Etymology

St Mary's Abbey, ecclesia sanctæ (beatæ ) Mariæ Theokesburiensis (Theokesberiæ )1102, 12, 13Tewk , 1232 Theok et passim . The great Benedictine abbey of St Mary was endowed in 1102 with great possessions by Robert fitz Hamon, lord of the manor of Tewkesbury, peopled by the Abbot and monks of Cranbourne, and its great church rebuilt (v. Rudder 743 ff).
