Etymology
'Tēodec's fortified place', v. burh . An OE pers.n. Tēodec or Tēoduc is not on record, but is found in the OE p.ns. æt Teodeces læge and on Teodeces broc 963 BCS 1111 (Wa); it would be a derivative of Tēoda (Redin 55), of which a variant Teot (t )a occurs in Teddington (45supra ). There is no evidence for Camden's and Leland's story of a hermit called Theocus who is stated to have dwelt there. The modern pronunciation is abnormal; late OE, early ME Tēokes - should have become ME Tekes - which is occasionally found, but other spellings like Tiokes -, Teokes -, Tokes -, etc., are ME WMidl variants; the modern Tewks - is a spelling pronunciation based on ME Teukes - with a new ME diphthong -eu -, which may in fact have arisen from Tēoduces - with loss of medial -d - (Phonol. § 33).
