Etymology

There was also a manor of Guppesfeld , Guppfylde 1520, 1533 ECP.'Guppi's hill and open country', v. hyll , feld . The pers.n. is an unrecorded OE  Guppi , which has a mutated variant Gyppi in Gibsmere (Nt 155), and also, as Ekwall shows, a weak form Guppa in such p.ns. as Gupworthy (So) or Guppy (Do); it is a hypocoristic form of an OE  pers.n. like Gūðbeorht . Cups Hill (36supra ) is probably named from this place.
