Etymology

Swilgate Bridge, formerly Pristor Bridge c. 1560Surv , where it is described as being near Swylyate meade ; the latter is also known as Swyllyatte mede 1487MinAcct , Swyllyot meade 1491TewkCt , Swillatmedow 1539AOMB , Swilgates medowe , Silyatt medowe 1540 ib, Swylyat medow 1542MinAcct . The bridge crosses the Swilgate (i, 12supra ) near the point where the cut of the Mill Avon joins it.
