Etymology

Mallerstang Scarth (lost), scard de Malrestang 1224FF , scare of Malerstange 1224 (1651) BdyR (R. 1), Scarth of Mallerstange 1581 ib (P. 1), Mallerstang scarth 1730Hothf . v. skarð 'gap, mountain pass'; the 1581 reference shows that this was near Dolphinsty (supra ), and the name clearly refers to the dip in the ridge between The Nab and Little Fell (grid 90–766003) through which the track to Ravenstonedale passes.
