Etymology

, 1777 M , the Nine standares 1636BdyR (M. 3), ye Nine standers 1687 ib (Miss 1) , a set of boundary marks on the hill between Winton and Hartley , from e. ModE  stander ' upright pillar ' , possibly adopted from its use as a mining term for a column of mineral left to support the ceiling of a mine ( cf. NED s.v. § 6 ) , cf. Tackan Tan(ii, 7supra ) ; Standerstane ( ii , 50 infra ) may be an earlier example of stander .
