, 1663 Chwd(KS) 176 , 1823 M , referring to a mountain ravine ( v. gil ) ; the first el . is unlikely to be OE  stōw in one of its original meanings , but it could be used here of ' anenclosure made of sheep-hurdles ' or the like ( cf. EPN ii, 159§3 ) .
