Etymology

Dolphinsty, Dowfinstie 1581BdyR (P. 1), Dolfinsty 1684Dd , Dofinsty 1720BdyR (M. 14). 'Dolfin's path', v. stīg . The ME  pers.n. Dolfin , which occurs in other p.ns. like Dolphin Seat (ii, 29infra ), Dolphenby (Cu 191), etc. (cf. Ekwall, ScandsCelts 68 note 1), is usually held to be from ON  Dólgfinnr (cf. Cu 191, Feilitzen 225).The name is that of a boundary mark and refers to the steep track which climbs over the mountain to Ravenstonedale.
