Etymology

Southwaite, Surthayt 13Musg , Sourthwatt 1324MinAcct , Sourthwayt 1360 Cl, Misc, 1362 Pat, Sourewathe 1390 ImpR, Sourethnayt (sic)1402 ib, Southwaite head 1792Hothf (Ma. 1). 'Damp, sour clearing', v. sūr , þveit , but the first el. could be ON  saurr 'mud, sour ground' (as in Sowerby ii, 69infra ).
