, 1859OS , Tack & Tann 1687BdyR ; this obscure name of a boundary stone may be connected with dial . tack ' cattle pasture hired out ' or with dial . tak ' a prop ofcoal left as a temporary support ' ( there are old coal pits in the vicinity ) ; the second el . may be the first el . of Tan Hill (YN) , which adjoins the county ; the origin of tan in the latter name is uncertain , but could be connected with Scots  dial. tan ' temporary hut ' ( EDD s.v . ) .
