Etymology

This may mean 'ham(m) of the people of Poling' (v. infra 171), referring to a small settlement of people from that place. There was another such a few miles away in Petworth, v. Limbo Fm supra 117, possibly also at Pallingfold in Rudgwick (1593 SRS 28). The name would show shortening of original long a in the trisyllable.
