Etymology

Rowley is the runanleagesmearc of 1018 (O.S. Facs iii. 39). The latter is clearly to be identified with the home of Elia de Runle (1296 SR), John de Rumlegh and Elia de Rondlegh (1327 SR), and John de Rondlegh (1332 SR). The first element is a pers. name Rūna , a pet-form of an OE  name beginning with Rūn -.The later development is difficult. The vowel must have re- mained long, Rūnan becoming Rūne (roune ), while later nl became dl . Rowdley was then assimilated to the very common Rowley type.
