Etymology

Cottenden is Cotelingdene 1180 KAC 6, 206, Kotelyndenn 1296 SR, Codelingedenne , Godelingedenne 1327 SR, Codelendenne 1332 SR (all p). 'The denn of (the people of) Cotela .' The name is not on record but is a regular diminutive formation. Cf. Cottesloe (PN Bk 87) and cotelesburgh (BCS 817) in a Wiltshire charter.
