Etymology

Quedley is Quodleigh 1605 SRS 14, 189 and is perhaps to be associated with the family of Adam de Querle (1296 SR). If the SR form is corrupt we may perhaps take the first element to be ME  cwede , 'evil, wicked, bad,' and take the whole name to be a term of reproach applied to some particular clearing (v. leah ).
