Etymology

Yard Fm (6″) is Yerde 1583 Musters, Yardland 1596 SrWills, and was the home of John de Virga (1314Rental ). This is the OE  gierd , gyrd , a measure of land, probably about 30 acres or a quarter of a hide, hitherto not noted in place-names, except in south-west England. Cf. Yard (PN D 48).
