Etymology

Song Hurst (6″) is Songhurst 1332 Penshurst, 1342Ass (p), 1604 SAC xii, Sunghurst 1332 SR (p), Oldesongehurst 1425Ct .This name, like Songhurst (PN Sx 135) in the not very distant parish of Wisborough Green, would seem to be a compound of OE  sang , 'singing, song, etc.,' and hyrst, but such a compound seems somewhat improbable. Cf. Songrede (1472Ct ) in Alfold.
