Etymology

Mapledrake Fm (6″) is Mapeldresshe 1241Ass (p), Mapuldrix 1368Rental , Mapeldrex 1381SR (p), Mapulderyhes t. Hy 5Ct , Holdemabiltrix 1436, Olde Mapuldrix 1524, Mapledrakesfeild 1625 Endowments, Maldrix 1704Rental . The first element is OE  mapulder , 'maple tree.' The second is difficult. Possibly we have the unrecorded OE  word etsce , meaning 'cornfield' or 'pasture land,' postulated by Ekwall to explain Cleeve Axe (PN Sx 511). The name seems to be found also in the form Mapyltryx (t. Hy 8) in Chobham.
