Etymology

Coverwood is Co wuda (sic)1165, Couerwuda 1166 P (p), Coverewurth 1263Ass (p), Covereworthe 1313 FF (p), Coverworth (e )1283Ct , 1294Ass , 1314Rental , 1342Ass (p), 1628, 1731 SRS xxxi, Cover Wood 1683Rental , Coverwood 1710ParReg . It is clear that the common confusion between wood and worth arose unusually early in this name. The place stands on a small stream, and the first element may possibly be a river-name Cover (cf. RN 100–1). One should note, however, that there is an unexplained coferan treow (BCS 179, 628, 905), alternatively ceofering treow (BCS 787), cofring treow (BCS 1051).
