Etymology

Perhaps 'Tossa 's burh.' This pers. name is not recorded but might be a pet form of Torhtsige . The parallel of Foston (PN NRY 39) quoted by Blomé (29) in support of Tottesbyrig is hardly applicable. That would not explain ME  forms in Tosse -.
