Etymology

Probably 'Ecghere 's farm,' v. tun , with later sound- substitution of ds for ME  gg . This is the reverse of the process discussed by Zachrisson (Studien i Modern Språkvetenskap 8, 123 ff). We may note similarly ts for ch in Pitsea (Ess), Titsey (Sr), Whitsbury (Ha), v. MLR 14, 342.
