Etymology

This is clearly a compound of Herton , the alternative name for Hartland (v. supra 71–2) and an element hind . This is most probably the common adverb hind , the reference being to its position in relation to Hartland itself. Cf. the common Devon use of yond in Youngcott infra 216 and other names.
