Etymology

'Salt-boiler's cottage', v. wællere , cot . The form Wallinge is an -ing 2 formation, analogous with Wallange 2212. The place is a mile from Northwich 2192 and adjoins Winnington 191supra , both places being notable for salt-making. There was a salt-works in Weaverham Lordship, cf. Salt Ho 198supra , Salt House Mdw 209infra . This small township, which belonged to the Nuns of Chester until 1360 (Orm2 i346) and was 'but one house and a constablewick' in 1671 (Sheaf3 49, (9923)), is now included with Winnington in Northwich c.p., and for the most part submerged in a reservoir.
