Weaverham Lordship

Early-attested site in the Parish of Weaverham

Historical Forms

  • Weaverham Lordship 1831 Bry
  • Manor of Weverham 1275 Cl
  • Weverham Alba 1535 VE

Etymology

(4) Weaverham Lordship, Weaverham Lordship 1831 Bry, Manor of Weverham 1275 Cl, Weverham Alba 1535 VE, v. lordes(c)hip. The significance of the suffix Alba 'white' is not apparent; the form may be a mistake for altera 'the other', i.e. the lordship as distinct from the township. Weaverham, like Frodsham 221infra , was anciently a manor of the duchy of Chester, and was similarly divided into the two parts, the town itself and the demesnes or lordship.
