Etymology

Ruloe (109–583729) [ˈru:lou], Roe-loe 1683 Orm2, Ruloe or New Hall , Ruloe Cob (b )1780EnclA , Ruloe Hall 1831 Bry, 1842 OS, Ruloe House 1839TA , Ruelow 1955 Index, 'rough mound', from rūh and hlāw , with cobb(e), hall and nīwe . This place is supposed the meeting-place of the hundred of Roelau 1086 DB, cf. 160supra , v. Tait 99, Anderson 190. The political importance of the place would be eclipsed by the shift to Eddisbury in the twelfth century, but it might account for the lost f.ns. le Mareschaldesfeld , le Schyrreffeld 1353ChFor , 'the mareschal's, and the sheriff's field', from feld 'a field, a piece of open ground' with marescal 'a master of horse, a steward', and scīr-(ge)rēfa 'a sheriff'.
