Etymology

'A single stone, a lonely stone, a stone by itself, from āna and stān , with hall , myln and lane . The first el. is confused with hān 'a stone'. The series of Ouston forms, and the Auston form, appear to be erroneous, either with -u - for -n -, or Ous -, Aus - for Ouns -, Auns - through loss of an abbreviation. The rock or stone which gave rise to the p.n. is no longer to be seen. The mill is in Milton 204infra .
