Etymology

'Wood near the rocky ground', v. stǣner , skógr . The wood would have been below the large area of exposed rock and boulders now called Clouds or Stennerskeugh Clouds (infra ) at grid 90–745006.There are many examples of OE stǣner in YW vii, 249, often influenced by stān, ME  stone (as in the earlier forms of Stennerskeugh); the interchange of -er - and -a (y )- in unstressed syllables is also well- evidenced (cf. Gl iv, 67 §15).
