Etymology

Bowderdale Beck & Head, Butheresdalebec , capite de Butheresdal 1224FF , Butherdaile (beck )1224 (1651) BdyR (R. 1), Boudirdal beck c. 1270 NB 486, Bowthirdale 1377SR (p), Bowdr -, Bowdardall 1594, 1595 PR, Boutherdaile 1636 ib, Bouderdail 1657 ib, Bootherdale 1764 NWm 225, cf. also Bowderdale Foot (ii, 45infra ). 'Valley of the booth or shelter', v. būð (gen.sg. búðar ), dalr , cf. Bowderdale (Cu 440); a similar Icel  p.n. Búðardalur was named from booths built by Hǫskuldr in the Laxá valley (cf. Franzen LaxdON 100).
