Etymology

Narthwaite, Nathwat 1584, 1598 PR, Nathat 1686 ib, Nathwait 1710 WillQ, Nauthatt 1657 PR, Narthwait (e )1766 WillQ, 1799 PR, 1823 M. 'The nearby clearing', v. -, þveit . Lindkvist 118 notes a similar 12th century p.n. in Cu (in Cu 287 this is taken to be from an ON  pers.n. Nate ), and cites parallels to the formation in ON  -búð , -býli 'neighbouring shed or farm'. The later forms appear to have substituted near (e.ModE  nar ).
