Etymology

Townhead, Town (e )head (e )1658, 1672, 1674 PR, 1777 WillQ, th ' townhead 1713 PR, also called Towne end 1671 ib, th ' Town -End 1721 ib. 'The upper end of the village', v. tūn (ME  toun ), hēafod , ende . On this use of tūn cf. Church Town (i, 81supra ). The village was called Rystndall towne , Ryssendaill towne 1585, 1626 PR, Town (e )1587, 1646 ib, (the ) Toune 1672, 1678 ib.
