Etymology

Wandale, Wandale Hill, Wandell (bank )1629, 1631 PR, Wandall 1635–1660 ib (freq ), Wandale 1710 WillQ, (-side ) 1823 M. Probably 'dark valley', v. wann , dæl (dalr). But it is possible that the first el. is ON  ván 'hunting place or track, fishing place' (cf. Jóhannesson 133, Hovda 219); a track passes on the west side of the valley over the mountain to Ravenstonedale.
