Etymology

Tarn, Tarn (e )1587, 1593–1643 PR (freq ), Tarn Ho, (the ) Tarne howse 1588, 1593 PR, Tarnhous (e )1627–1664 ib (freq ), 1681 NicVisit.v. tjǫrn 'pond, lake'. The two farms are distinct, Tarn being at grid 90–720976 and named from two small ponds there, and Tarn Ho, which was rebuilt in 1664 (NWm 217), being at grid 90–749034 and named from a large tarn, which also gave its name to Tarn Mire (ii, 10supra ) and Tarn Sike (infra ). Another Tarn Mire is named from Greenside Tarn (infra ) at grid 90–714035.
