Etymology

Dovengill, Devingill , Devengill 1578–1597 PR (freq ), Dovengill , Douengill 1628, 1679 ib, 1710 NWm 224, Douingill 1696, 1704 PR. The earliest Dev - forms in PR are probably misreadings of Dov - (e and o are very similar in the handwriting of the period). 'Duvan's ravine', v. gil . The first el. is most probably the OIr  pers.n. Dubán (borrowed in ON  as Dufan ), as in Dovenby (Cu 284), cf. Ekwall, ScandsCelts 68.
