Etymology

Uldale Gill, Ulnedale (sic for Uluedale )Hy 2 (1645) NB 518, Uluesdaile 1224 (1651) BdyR (R. 1), Vldall , Uldall 1585, 1648 PR, 1730Hothf , partly in YW (vi, 270). 'Wolves' valley', v. ulfr , dalr . The same name occurs in Orton and Tebay (ii, 48, 53 infra ); the Uldale in Tebay is partly in this parish (89–6401) but is a different place from Uldale Gill (90–7597).
