Historical Forms

  • Alderscholes 1379 PT
  • Alderscoles 1389 YDiv 1585 WYD 1704 LPTax

Etymology

Alderscholes, Alderscholes 1379 PT (p), Alderscoles 1389 YD iv, 1585 WYD, 1704 LPTax. The first el. could be OE  alor 'alder-tree', but normally, however, alor does not become alder in YW p.ns., its common form being aller , oller or owler ; we have probably therefore a pers.n., OE  Aldhere , Aldrēd or the like. v. skáli 'shed'.
