This bridge across the R. Aire is named from a lost place Apperley , Apperlay 1279 Ebor, 1585 Surv 195 ('a closse'), 1710 WRC 44, The Apperley 1851TA , which means 'clearing with an apple-tree', from æppel-trēow (as the first spelling shows) and lēah .
