Etymology

'Ceol(l)'s hill or mound', from the OE  pers.n. Cēol or Ceoll and hlāw . For the Shill - form cf. Chevet i, 278supra . For the frequent -ll - we have to assume an OE  gen.sg. Ceolles , which is likely enough if Ceol is a shortened form of OE  pers.ns. like Cēolfrið , Cēolhelm , etc.; it is paralleled by the OE  spellings of the weak pers.n. Cēola , Ceolla .
