Etymology

The first el. is probably OE  Frīsa , Frēsa 'the Frisian', doubtless used as a byname. 'The Frisian's nook of land', v. -ing 4 , halh . Some spellings have a common metathesis to Firs -. Cf. Frizington Cu 336.
