Etymology

Wrose, Wrose 1379 PT (p), 1547 FF, 1585 Survet passim to 1817 M, Wrayse 1426 Calv, Thorpe Wrosse 1578 FF, Whrose 1699 YDr, v. wrāse 'a knot, something twisted', here referring to the prominent steep-sided hill on which the village stands, with the meaning 'broken or twisting hill' (v. EPN ii, 278 and cf. Wraysholme La 197).
