Trap Sike, Strope Syke (Head )1585 Surv, Strope Syke Wood 1847TA , near Newby Strawpe (f.n. infra ), probably ME  stroupe 'throat, gullet' (related to ON  strúpi ), used in later dial. of 'the spout of a kettle', etc., in this p.n. with an extension of meaning to 'the outlet of a stream or spring' (similar to that of spoute in p.ns.).
