Parish in the County of West Riding of Yorkshire

Etymology

Several ancient townships (Allerton, Bowling, Bradford, Heaton, Great Horton and Manningham from the old parish of Bradford together with Bolton, a former township in Calverley parish 224supra ) were united to form the older Borough of Bradford (6″ O.S. 1905–6); the township of Denholme had been created out of Thornton, and Stanbury out of Haworth.At the present time the City Borough of Bradford includes the old borough of Bradford (including its ancient townships) and the townships of Clayton, Eccleshill, and Thornton from the parish of Bradford, Idle from the parish of Calverley (231supra ). North Bierley, Tong and Wyke from the parish of Birstall (8supra ), and Esholt from the parish of Guiseley in Skyrack wapentake (pt. iv). Of the other townships formerly in the parish of Bradford, Denholme and Shipley are now urban districts, Oxenhope, Haworth and Stanbury are in the Municipal Borough of Keighley in East Staincliffe wapentake (pt. vi infra ) and Wilsden is in Bingley Urban District (pt. iv infra ) in Skyrack wapentake.
