Etymology

'Woodland glade or clearing overgrown with fern', v. fearn , lēah .Loss of -n - is not uncommon with this el. (cf. Barlow, Fairburn pt. iv infra and EPN i, 166 for other examples). The affix Tyas is a feudal name from the family of le Tyeis or Teutonicus who held land in this neighbourhood from the thirteenth century (YD i freq , 1236, 1240 FF, 1267 Ch, 1303 KF, etc.).
